Remembering the future

Following a rich life with postings around the globe, the memory of Lieutenant Commander David Angus and his wife Mary has settled at Mrs Macquaries Point.

Looking to the sea that buoyed their life together, on the point nestled between David’s Navy base at Garden Island and Mary’s beloved Garden, the bench dedicated in their honour unites both their passions and their children.

Because I want future generations of my family to know about my parents, I now feel a responsibility to protect this beautiful garden in the middle of the city for my grandson and future generations.

When Pauline, David’s sister suggested the family dedicate a bench she could see the value of celebrating the lives of their parents. But the experience has become much more than remembering the past.

Over the years each of David and Mary’s four children has made a different part of Australia their home, while their families have grown to span many generations. Their parent’s bench is a beacon uniting the family for special occasions and helping them feel connected when they visit.

For Pauline this special place ties together the many threads of her life. Pauline brings her grandson to visit, while her niece talks fondly of jogging past each morning. Pauline’s husband has also dedicated the neighbouring bench just up the hill to his parents.
