Deadly Days

Deadly Days at the Botanic Gardens

Deadly Days bring together First Nations youth to celebrate and learn from each other with the aim to empower the voices of First Nations youth. Through connection to Country and to each other students are encouraged towards deeper understanding and awareness of Aboriginal history and culture.   

Led by our Aboriginal Educators, each day is designed around belonging, kinship and cultural connection between individuals, families and community. 

As Australia’s first botanic garden and oldest continuous operating scientific organisation, we are committed to strengthen First Nations cultures. Each of the Gardens are significant historical, ceremonial and traditional trade grounds for the Gadigal, Dharawal, Bidjigal and Dharug people respectively.  

Deadly Days are available for applications, please see dates, themes and eligibility criteria below.

Applications 

Applications are now open for the Deadly Days 2022 education series.  

All applications must be submitted via the online request form and are subject to approval. 

Applications close two weeks before each scheduled date 

Cost/Subsidy 

If your school or organisation’s application is successful, we will subsidise the full staffing and materials/equipment cost of the Botanic Garden program. 

Travel and other costs remain the responsibility of the school or organisation. 

Sessions offered 

School education programs will run on set days and times as per the Deadly Days 2022 series, available at the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney (RBG) and the Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan (ABG) 

Student Numbers 

Each Deadly Day in the series allows a maximum number of 60 students per school or organisation with either an entire cohort of Indigenous students or a 50/50 buddy system with a minimum of 50% Indigenous student attendance.  

Excursion Subsidy Eligibility 

Applications meeting one or more of the below criteria will be given precedence in the approval process: 

  • your school offers a targeted program for Indigenous students 

  • your school is listed on the DET list of Special Schools (Schools for Specific Purpose) or you are on the DET list of Support Classes in Regular and Special Schools  

  • your school has an ICSEA score <1000 for Resource Allocation Model funding 

  • If you’re not a school, your organisation has a focus on programs for Indigenous youth and/or is listed with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) with engagement with its primary purpose to support Indigenous youth. 

Terms and conditions 

  1. A school or organisation may apply for a maximum of 60 students per Deadly Day and a maximum of two primary (K-6) and two Secondary (7-12) Deadly Days per year. 

  1. Primary days are open to students from years K-6 and Secondary days are open to students from years 7-12. 

  1. Schools or organisations must complete and submit the application form to be considered for the Deadly Days program. 

  1. The Deadly Days programs are offered subject to funding and program availability. All applications will be considered based on the criteria stated and offers of subsidy are made at the discretion of the Royal Botanic Garden and Domain Trust. 

  1. The Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain Trust reserves the right to alter the program schedule and will provide notice of any changes to booked groups as soon as practicable. 

  1. In the event of extreme weather or in line with NSW public health orders or NSW Department of Education guidelines, The Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain Trust reserves the right to cancel or modify the program schedule without incurring any liability to the participating group/s. 

  1. Schools agree to disclose to parents, and organisations agree to disclose to paying clients that the excursion is being offered by the Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain Trust free of charge at the equivalent value of X per student, by including the statement and logo in the drop down at the bottom of the page.  

  1. Schools and organisations receiving the subsidy are subject to the general terms and conditions outlined on the Botanic Gardens website.
