Gruel Recipe

Gruel Recipe

Polenta is an ingredient close to what the convicts were given...maize meal. With the maize meal they made hominy, or its other name is gruel. Use this recipe to make your own gruel and eat like a convict!

Utensils

  • Large saucepan
  • Measuring cups
  • Mixing spoon

Ingredients

  • 1 cup polenta
  • 750 mL (3 cups) cold water
  • Pinch of salt

Steps:

  1. Put the polenta in a large saucepan with a pinch of salt and 500 mL (2 cups) of cold water.
  2. Cook over low heat, stirring for about 10 minutes, or until the polenta has thickened. Be careful – the mixture will bubble and pop.
  3. Add remaining 250 mL (1 cup) of water and stir for a few seconds to loosen up the mixture.
  4. Serve!

Variations

  • Add 250ml of milk instead of the 250ml of water at the end of the recipe.
  • Add a tablespoon of brown sugar and/or currants at the end too if you like.
