Project Codium - Saving Seaweed

Codium fragile needs our help! Dive in and learn about this extraordinary native seaweed. Using a Design Thinking Approach, take on the challenge to build community awareness to protect Codium fragile and its intertidal ocean environment!

Why Global Citizens Should Care

The oceans provide food, play a vital role in regulating the earth’s climate, and are essential to global commerce. The United Nations Global Goal 14 calls on countries to protect the oceans from further degradation. (https://www.globalcitizen.org)

Objectives of Project Codium

  • To raise community awareness of Codium fragile and the threats to its habitat
  • To foster responsible care for intertidal ecosystems
  • To understand First Nations knowledge and conservation of Sea Country
  • To design community awareness solutions that inform people about unique seaweeds such as Codium fragile and the vital role they play in keeping our oceans healthy

Science and Technology - Stage 2

  • ST2-4LW-S  A student compares features and characteristics of living and non-living things.
Science and Technology - Stage 3
  • ST3-4LW-S A student examines how the environment affects the growth, survival and adaptation of living things
  • ST3-5LW-T A student explains how food and fibre are produced sustainably in managed environments for health and nutrition
Skills
  • ST2-1WS-S A student questions, plans and conducts scientific investigations, collects and summarises data and communicates using scientific representations.
  • ST2-2DP-T A student selects and uses materials, tools and equipment to develop solutions for a need or opportunity
  • ST2-5LW-T A student describes how agricultural processes are used to grow plants and raise animals for food, clothing and shelter
  • ST3-1WS-S A student plans and conducts scientific investigations to answer testable questions, and collects and summarises data to communicate conclusions
  • ST3-2DP-T A student plans and uses materials, tools and equipment to develop solutions for a need or opportunity
Inquiry Questions

Stage 2
How can we group Codium fragile
What are the similarities and differences between the life cycles of Codium and other living things?
How is Codium fragile interdependent on its environment and other living things?

Stage 3
How do the physical conditions of the Greater Sydney area affect the survival of Codium fragile
How do the structural and behavioural features of Codium fragile support its survival?
How can we learn from First Nations approaches to marine conservation of this species?
  • Literacy
  • Numeracy
  • Information and Communication Technology
  • Critical and Creative Thinking
  • Personal and Social
  • Ethical Understanding
  • Intercultural Understanding.

Below are the four phases of the design process. Follow each consecutively to complete your STEM journey and help save seaweed.
