Aboriginal People and Plants - Stages 2 & 3

Your students will investigate a wide variety of local native plants which were integral in the life of the first Australians. In this lesson, Aboriginal Education Officers will provide a personal perspective of how indigenous people of the Sydney area used plants for food, medicine, tools and weapons, giving students a unique opportunity to meet and interact with members of our indigenous communities.

Excursion key themes:

  • Traditional customs within Aboriginal culture
  • Traditional methods of hunting and gathering local food sources 
  • Plants that can be used for food, medicine, tools, weapons and shelter by Aboriginal people 

Students will... 

  • Take a walk through the Cadi Jam Ora and learn about the traditional and contemporary uses of native plants
  • Examine plants that were used by original custodians for food, medicine, shelter, tools and weapons
  • Experience the kinds of objects made from these plants as well as other aspects of Aboriginal culture
