Investigate the science, history and significance of botanical illustration. Learn the skills and techniques used to portray plants accurately. Be inspired by the botanical illustrations in the Royal Botanic Garden’s collection. Explore the succulent, rose or native Cadi gardens to take photographs of plants. Collaborate with nature to create a beautiful and inspiring digital artwork.

Excursion key themes:

  • History, significance and science of botanical illustration
  • Artistic techniques used to render plants in scientific detail
  • Photographic manipulation using iPad drawing application to create an artwork

Students will... 

  • Investigate the work of botanical illustrators and approximate conventions and activities to create an illustration and recognise some of their constraints
  • Learn about plants as a source of inspiration to make art
  • Create a plant portrait using illustrator’s paper and pen
  • Create sustained drawings using learned skills and techniques
  • Create and manipulate digital images using an iPad application
  • View original botanical illustrations by Margaret Flockton and other artists

Stage 4 Visual Arts
