Frequently Asked Questions

Who can attend the Sydney Science Trail education program?  

  • Secondary students in Years 7 to 11 on Monday 15 August and Tuesday 16 August 2022.  

  • Primary students in Years 3 to 6 on Wednesday 17, Thursday 18 and Friday 19 August 2022.  

Education bookings are available to NSW public schools, registered non-government schools and registered home schools. 

What does a day at Sydney Science Trail offer?  

All students will participate in: 

  • The Sydney Science Trail Expo 

  • An interactive STEM-based workshop  

  • A Science Show (or a STEM-based panel discussion on Monday 15 August only).   

All STEM activities are delivered by experienced science communicators from the Australian Museum, Royal Botanic Gardens, partnering universities and research institutions, and professional science education providers. Educators can advise of their preferred show/panel discussion and workshop in the booking request form, and preferences will be considered in confirming the specific schedule for booked groups.   

What is the cost per student?  

Participation is $18 (inc GST) per student. Supervising teachers do not incur a cost as duty of care remains the responsibility of the booked school or group.  

A minimum charge of 20 students per booked group applies. Registered homes schools may wish to purchase as a group or through an association.  

We have limited capacity to support smaller groups who are unable to meet the minimum charge requirements. Please contact for more information. 

Can I get a refund if I need to cancel or reduce my group booking?  

If you need to cancel or make changes to your numbers, notification must be made in writing to by COB July 29 2022. 

How many places are available?  

360 student places are available each day, totaling 1,800 across the five days. 

What is the schedule for the day?  

Students should arrive by 9:15am at either the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney or the Australian Museum. This will allow students to settle in before activities commence at 9:45am sharp.  

All students will walk from one site to the other during the day. Instructions on the specific meeting locations for different groups will be provided after booking.  

Students will participate in sessions between 9:45am – 10:45am, 11:30am – 12:30pm and 1:15pm – 2:15pm.  

There are two 45-minute breaks scheduled between 10:45am – 11:30am and 12:30pm – 1:15pm.  

These breaks will allow students to have morning tea/lunch and walk between the Royal Botanic Gardens and the Australian Museum.  

Activities are scheduled to finish at 2:15pm. Students that started at the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney will finish at the Australian Museum, and vice-versa. Please check your confirmed program for your start and finish points.  

Do schools have to organise their own transportation?  

Yes, schools are responsible for bringing students and teachers to and from site.   

How will students move between the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney and the Australian Museum? 

Students will need to complete one walk from either the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney to the Australian Museum or vice-versa.  

We have allowed a 45 minute break for groups to undertake this walk. It is an easy, flat walk covering 1.2km, and estimated to take an individual 13 minutes.  

All students and teachers will be escorted by a Sydney Science Trail volunteer along the safest pedestrian route.

What size group will the students be placed in?  

Students will be placed into Group A, B or C, with a maximum of 120 students in each Group. Each Group of up to 120 will participate in the Sydney Science Trail Expo and a Science Show (or panel discussion on Monday 15 August). For workshops, students will be broken into groups of a maximum size of 30. Students will be kept within their school groups as much as possible.  

Do teachers/adults need to accompany students? 

Yes, allocate at least one adult per 15 students to attend with each group. Schools/educators retain duty of care for all their students on the excursion.  

How do I book? 

Teachers or home school educators/associations can book places for students through the Royal Botanic Gardens website from 27 April until COB 1 August 2022. 

The receiving of a booking confirmation document by email constitutes an agreement that your excursion is booked and confirmed and subject to our cancellation policy. 

Invoices based on final numbers will be issued on August 1 2022. Payment options will be included on the invoice, including credit card options. American Express, cash and cheque payments are not accepted under any circumstances. 

Once issued, invoices are final with payment terms of 30 days.  

Can gifted and talented primary students attend on the secondary school days?  

Primary school students are not able to attend on the secondary school days. Students are encouraged to ask questions to extend the educational offering to meet their level of learning.  

How are you ensuring COVID safety?  

We have undertaken a thorough risk assessment for this event, prioritising COVID safety.  

We have limited our daily capacity to a maximum of 360 students per day. Students will be allocated into one of three Groups with a maximum of 120 students. Additional COVID-safe cleaning will be undertaken throughout the day.  

We will ensure that any staff and volunteers who are unwell stay home and do not attend, and we ask educators ensure the same for their students.   

What is the wet weather plan? 

All booked programs will go ahead in wet weather, unless it is an extreme weather condition. Activities will be held indoors. In the event of extreme weather conditions, you will be contacted by the Sydney Science Trail organisers, and the Extreme Weather and Cancellation Policy occurs.  

What do students need to bring? 

Students should be equipped with sturdy walking shoes, sun protective clothing and wet weather gear.  

Students need to bring their own morning tea, lunch and drink bottle.
