How do I estimate the height of the tree?
There are several sophisticated and expensive instruments that use angles and/or lasers to measure tree height, but unless you have access to one of these, you will need to estimate the tree height. You can do this several ways.
- Follow the steps for Method 1: Using a Piece of Paper at this link http://www.wikihow.com/Measure-the-Height-of-a-Tree.
- If you know your height, stand against the tree and estimate how many of you would stack up on top of each other to the very top of the trees leaves/crown. This can be done by using a photo of yourself standing at the base of the tree, including the full height of the tree in the photo.
- Stand against the tree and have someone else from a distance estimate how many of you would stack up on top of each other until you reached the top of the trees leaves/crown. This is more accurate than the first method.
