How do I work out the direction the hollow is facing?

The direction of the hollow may play a role in determining if it is used by wildlife. For example, a hollow facing north may provide warmth through winter, but may become too hot during summer. To measure the direction the hollow is facing use a compass or an app. Stand at the tree, facing north, and record whether the hollow entrance is facing north, north east, east, south east, south, south west, west or north east. You can also enter the compass direction in degrees. If you don’t have a compass, you can estimate the direction of the hollow based on the direction of the sun.
