Celebrate New Year’s Eve 2022 with an open-air picnic and a spectacular view while supporting the wonderful work that takes place at the Botanic Gardens.

Sydney's New Year's Eve has been established as one of the most astounding events of the year. The breathtaking fireworks display is renowned as one of the best in the world.
 
Foundation and Friends of the Botanic Gardens invites you to welcome 2023 at the heart of the action. The Mare and Foal Lawn within Royal Botanic Garden is one of the best harbour-side vantage points with a spectacular view over the Opera House and Harbour Bridge.
 
Our exclusive open-air picnic is perfect for groups of all ages, including families with children. This self-catered outdoor picnic is one of the few New Year's Eve events where BYO alcohol is permitted. In this fully enclosed area you will be able to stretch out and relax while enjoying your favourite snacks and a stunning view.

This event is an exclusive membership benefit for members of Foundation and Friends of the Botanic Gardens.
  •  Members whose subscription is current on 31 December are eligible to purchase up to 10 adult tickets, plus additional children’s tickets.
  • Non-Members can select a ticket bundle that includes a 12 month membership, that comes with amazing benefits, and are eligible to purchase up to 10 adult tickets, plus additional children’s tickets.

NYE Picnic with Foundation & Friends


Q: What time is the event?
Gates to the event open at 5.00 pm with last entry at 8.30 pm. The event finishes at 12.15 am.

Q: What time are the fireworks?
There are two fireworks displays on New Year’s Eve, the first is at 9:00 pm and the largest display is hosted at midnight. The display is synchronised to music which is broadcast at the event.

Q: How do I join as a Foundation and Friends of the Botanic Gardens (Foundation & Friends) member?
If you are not already a member, you can purchase a ticket bundle, which includes a Foundation & Friends Membership as well as ticket/tickets to the NYE Picnic Event.

Q: If I change my mind or my circumstances change can my tickets be refunded?
 Unfortunately no. Once the tickets have been issued, there will be no refunds. Tickets are non-transferable.

Q: I am a member and have purchased one set of tickets. How do I purchase extra tickets?
For additional tickets, please call Foundation & Friends office at (02) 9231 8182 between Monday – Thursday, 9am – 3pm. Our friendly team will happily help you.

Q: Will tickets be sold at the event?
 No. All ticket need to be purchased prior arrival. The ticket sales will conclude on 31 December at 8.15pm unless sold out prior.

Q: My partner and I have a Household membership, how many tickets can we buy?
You can purchase a maximum of 10 adult tickets in total, including 2 member tickets at $160 each, 8 member’s guest tickets at $190 each plus additional children’s tickets.

Q: Can I buy food at the event?
This is a self-catered event with only limited snacks available for purchase. We recommend that you bring all food and drinks into the event. Please be aware that sharp knives are not permitted, we recommend bringing plastic utensils and cups. Please also also note that the only glass permitted is wine bottles (including sparkling wine). No other glass or glassware is allowed. Therefore, please make sure to bring only plastic cups and all beer, soft drink and other items in cans or plastic containers to avoid any disappointments.

Q: Can I bring alcohol into the event?
Yes. The amount of alcohol permitted per person must fit into the equivalent of a small handheld esky. We encourage the responsible consumption of alcohol. Please note that the only glass permitted is wine bottles (including sparkling wine). No other glass is allowed. Please make sure to bring all beer, soft drink and other items in cans or plastic containers.

Q: What are the seating arrangements? Can I bring my own chairs?
This is a picnic style event so please bring your picnic blanket along. Camping chairs are not permitted but you may bring low line beach chairs with rounded metal frames that will not harm the lawn. Please do not bring chairs that can dig into the ground as they are not permitted. 

Q: I have lost my ticket, what do I do?
Your ticket has been emailed to you, please check the ticketbooth website for additional assistance

Q; Is there anything I should bring? Anything that is not allowed?
There are no pass outs once in the event, so please bring everything you need when you arrive. As this is a BYO picnic event with very limited snacks available for purchase, we recommend bringing a picnic blanket and your favourite snacks and refreshments. For additional entertainment board games and card games are encouraged. We also recommend bringing a warm top, jacket, or a rug as it can be a bit colder next to the harbour.

You are NOT allowed to bring aerosols like insect sprays, sharp knives, camping or shade structures, drones, poppers, or sparklers. Projectile outdoor games such as balls, frisbees, and toss games are not permitted. No glass is allowed other than wine bottles (including sparkling wine). Please do not bring chairs that can dig into the ground as they are not permitted. To enquire about specific items not mentioned, please contact Foundation & Friends office.

Q: Will the event be Covid safe?
The Royal Botanic Gardens takes the safety of our guests very seriously. All events at the Gardens during NYE2022 will be Covid safe and all events will follow the relevant Health guidelines.

Q: Where is the New Year's Eve Picnic located?

New Year's Eve Picnic is held at the Mare & Foal Lawn, right by the water overlooking Opera House and Harbour Bridge inside the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney. 

Event entry and exit is via Art Gallery Road, which is closed to traffic on New Year’s Eve.

The event site is approximately 300 metres or a 7-minute walk from the entry gate on Art Gallery Road. Pathways are sealed and relatively flat.

Q: How do I get there?

Due to extensive road closures and high pedestrian traffic in the city, public transport is the easiest way to get to the event. There are additional trains, bus and ferry services available and transport hubs are within easy reach of this site.

The closest train stations are:

  • Martin Place Train Station: 1 km from the managed access entry gate on Art Gallery Rd.
  • St James Train Station: 900 m to the managed access gate entry gate on Art Gallery Rd.

Q: Is New Year's Eve Picnic a wheelchair accessible NYE event?

Yes, New Year's Eve Picnic is a wheelchair accessible, but it is a picnic style event and much of the site is grass terrain. Movement around the site can be restricted as spectators are seated on the lawn.

There is an accessible viewing area that is suitable for wheelchairs and with limited seating and available upon request. If required, ticket holders can book mobility assistance in advance of the event.

Facilities and Site Details

Smoking: This is a non-smoking event. There will be a designated smoking area away from where patrons are seated.

Pass Outs: There are NO pass outs once a ticket holder has entered

Conditions of Entry

Please remember you are entering the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney and Domain – a sensitive environment. Please consider the safety of other patrons. All patrons entering the site will be subject to security bag check and must show valid tickets. Restricted items may be confiscated and entry refused to any persons not complying with conditions of entry. 

The following items will not be allowed to be brought into the event site:
  • No glass other than wine/sparkling wine bottles
  • No sharp knives or weapons
  • No illegal substances
  • No aerosol cans
  • No pets
  • No tents or umbrellas (smaller personal umbrellas no more than 50 cm are permissible)
  • No projectile outdoor games such as balls
  • No portable BBQs, drink holders or chairs with legs that may sink into lawn
  • No drones
  • No sparklers, party poppers or candles
