Tissue culture and cryopreservation

Alternatives to seedbanking include tissue culture and cryopreservation.

Species with seeds that do not tolerate any drying can be conserved by tissue culture or cryopreservation of tissue-cultured material. These techniques are often applied to Australian native rainforest species

For an overview of ex situ conservation options for rainforest species in the South Pacific, including the process of deciding whether seedbanking, tissue culture or cryopreservation is most suitable, see Sommerville et al (2017) Australian Journal of Botany 65: 609-624
