Project aims

  • To prepare a treatment of the Restionaceae and Anarthriaceae suitable for on-line publication in the Flora of Australia

Project Summary

The project began with studies of Restionaceae in NSW and was expanded to the classification of all the Australian species as well as the phylogeny of the family and closely related families worldwide. These are rush-like plants, almost entirely of the Southern Hemisphere, closely related to the Poaceae (grasses) with major concentration of species in Western Australia. Over many years, this has included describing 51 new species, reclassifying 44, describing two new subfamilies and publishing a DNA-based phylogeny of the restiid clade. Now the results of this research are being assembled into an account of all 145 Australian Restionaceae species of subfamilies Sporadanthoideae and Leptocarpoideae and of the 11 species of Anarthriaceae.

Research Update

Draft manuscript is being updated to incorporate generic reclassifications and bring it into line with Flora of Australia format. The reclassifications have arisen from improved knowledge of evolutionary relationships through the DNA component of the research. This includes preparing keys for species identification, descriptions, bibliographies and synonymies. Several small genera have been almost fully updated. Some names have been lectotypified to clarify their application.
