Mother’s Day Classic

This year the Women in Super Mother’s Day Classic celebrates its 21st consecutive year. In that time more than 1.2 million Australians have walked and run their way to raising more the $33 million for breast cancer research. On Sunday 13 May the community will again unite and walk all over breast cancer. This year the Sydney MDC involves a 4km walk and run, a 7km walk and an 8km run.

What is the event?
 
The 21st annual Mother’s Day Classic is a nation-wide community event that raises awareness for breast cancer through participation, fun, fitness and health. All proceeds raised through the event go towards the National Breast Cancer Foundation. It is a carnival style event with food, coffee, jumping castles, roving entertainers, live entertainment and information on breast cancer research.
 
The 4 kilometre / 8 kilometre runs and 4 kilometre / 7 kilometre walks start just north of Martin Place in Macquarie Street and finish in the Phillip Precinct, the Domain. Races commence in waves from 7.10 am, 7.50 am, 8.45 am and 9.00 am and event concludes at 12:00 pm midday. Up to 13,000 patrons are expected to attend.

Which areas of the Domain will be impacted by this event and when?
 
The Mother’s Day Classic event site will be located in Phillip Precinct, the Domain with 4 kilometre / 8 kilometre run and 4 kilometre /7 kilometre walk road course along Art Gallery Roads and Mrs Macquaries Road in the Yurong Precinct as well as Sydney CBD roads including Macquarie Street, Prince Albert Road and College Street.  
 
As this is a major event, the site will be marked out and some sections of the Domain will be temporarily fenced off to the public for safety reasons. However, pedestrian access will be maintained on pathways. Bump in will commence on Friday 11 May 2018 and the site will be returned to public access pm on Monday 14 May 2018.
 
I am not attending the event, will I still be able to access the Garden and Domain on the event day/s?
 
Yes, pedestrian access to the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney and Domain will be maintained at all times with marshals in place to guide pedestrians to crossing points along the course. On the event day, there will be some necessary traffic and access restrictions in place for safety reasons. 
 
What will the traffic and access impacts be?
 
The Garden and Domain will be open for all visitors and spectators on event day.  However, some necessary changes will be in place such as road closures and parking for safety reasons.
 
Road Closures:

  • Art Gallery Road and Mrs Macquaries Road will be closed from 5.00 am to 12.00 noon. No parking will be permitted during these times and access is restricted to authorised event staff and stakeholders with valid ID/passes up to 6.00 am. No vehicle access in or out of Art Gallery Road will be permitted after 6.00 am.

  • Hospital Road will be open to two way traffic from 5.00 am to 12.00 midday from Shakespeare Place only (via Cahill Expressway from the east). There will be no access from Art Gallery Road. A clearway will be in operation on the eastern side of Hospital Road.

  • External road closures and clearways are planned in the Sydney CBD to facilitate this event. For the latest traffic information, visit www.livetraffic.com. Search under Major Event tab for Mother’s Day Classic event.

Parking restrictions / parking availability: Public parking on Art Gallery and Mrs Macquaries Road will be available from 12.00 pm midday on event day.
Parking is available in Domain Carpark which will be open for patrons on the event day from 4.30 am.
Mobility Pass Holder access: No access or mobility parking during road closure periods between 5.00 am and 12.00 midday. During these closure periods, parking is available in Domain Carpark from 4.30 pm on event day.
Gate Closures: Gates will be open as per normal operating hours.
Footpath Closures: Pedestrian access to the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney and Domain will be maintained at all times with marshals in place to guide pedestrians to crossing points along the course. On the event day, there will be some necessary traffic and access restrictions in place for safety reasons. 
 
Will the Pavilion / Botanic Garden restaurant be open as usual?
 
Yes, both venues will open as usual.
 
Will the Garden Shop still be operating?
 
Yes.
 
Will the Choo Choo Express still be operating?
 
Yes.
 
Will there be any sound impacts related to this event?
 
The Mother’s Day Classic is not a music event. However, there will be amplified sound and music as part of the event atmosphere. This will include a stage in the Domain. 
 
Sound checks and rehearsals times will be carried out intermittently at the following times:
 

  • sound checks 6.00 am and 6.15 am on Sunday 13 May.

  • event sound 6.15 am to 12.00 pm on Sunday 13 May.
