Southern Japan with Relle Mott

Experience the beauty of autumn in Japan on a journey from Nagasaki to Kyoto, taking less-travelled byways.

This trip is all about historic regional towns, gardens, ceramics and art, set in a backdrop of spectacular autumn colour, with the added bonus of hot springs and interesting train trips.

Leaving Nagasaki, we traverse the volcanic northern area of the island of Kyushu by bus and train, visiting pottery towns, forest temples, and hot springs resorts. Onward to the main island of Honshu where we explore sleepy samurai towns and more ceramics centres, enjoy a spectacular train trip along the Sea of Japan coast, wander the sublime Adachi garden in Matsue, and be inspired by a day trip to Naoshima art island. We finish our travels in Kyoto in all its autumnal glory.
